What ‘questionable’ actually means on an NFL injury report
“Questionable” means a player’s availability is uncertain. It is not a percentage, a prediction or a substitute for the official game-day inactive list.

EXPLAINER
“Questionable” means a player’s availability for the next game is uncertain. That is the NFL’s definition. It does not mean the player is 50–50, does not say how many snaps the player might take, and does not identify the final active roster.
The cleanest way to read an NFL injury report is to separate two columns that answer different questions. Practice participation records what happened during the practice session. Game status records the club’s stated expectation for the upcoming game. Reading a limited practice as an automatic game-day absence — or a full practice as an automatic guarantee — skips that distinction.
HOW IT WORKS
The NFL’s injury-report policy defines the game-status labels directly. “Out” means the player will not play. “Doubtful” means the player is unlikely to play. “Questionable” means it is uncertain whether the player will play.
Practice participation has its own categories. Did Not Participate means the player did not participate in practice. Limited Participation means less than 100 percent of the player’s normal repetitions. Full Participation means 100 percent of normal repetitions. Those labels describe the reported practice level, not an on-field role projection for Sunday, Monday or Thursday.
The NFL removed “probable” from the game-status report in 2016. In announcing the revision, the league said a player who was certain to play would no longer need a game-status designation even if he had appeared on the practice report during the week. That is why an empty game-status field can be useful context, but it is still not a substitute for the official inactive list.
WHAT IT MEANS THIS WEEK
Start with the official NFL injury report or the club’s official report. Read the player’s practice line and game-status line separately. If the status says out, the player will not play. If it says questionable, availability is unresolved. If the status column is blank, do not invent a certainty from the practice line alone.
Then return for the official game-day inactive announcement. The inactive list is the final availability checkpoint for that game. It can also contain players who were not the focus of the week’s injury report, because teams must name their inactive players before kickoff.
This approach is deliberately less dramatic than treating every practice update as breaking news. It is also more accurate. A reader who needs a clean availability answer should use the game-status column first and the official inactive list last.
